Your assignment is to read and critically analyze Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (pg. 151). As you read, consider the following:
- What argument is Martin Luther King, Jr. trying to make? Is he trying to make multiple arguments?
- What rhetorical appeals (Logos, Pathos, Ethos) does MLK make use of. Try to find an example of each appeal.
- With which two groups does MLK find himself “gravely disappointed”? Why is he disappointed with these two groups?
- Does MLK create a feeling of goodwill and understanding, even as he argues with those who disagree? If so, how?
These are just some of the many things you might consider from the Letter, which we will discuss in class on Wednesday. Please keep in mind that this, and all analyses, must be at least 300 words in length. Let me know if you have any questions.
