Making teams work is not easy. Please devise an incentive system for a research team the productive output of which will be “scientific knowledge”, which can only be imperfectly captured by publications, patents, etc., because not all of the produced knowledge is publishable or patentable, or even become known to team members themselves. Moreover, ideas “bounce” around individuals through discussions in a free-flow sort of manner. Thus, while people likely have some rough ideas, it is difficult to precisely measure who has contributed what and how much. A further complication is that it takes time for publications or patents to come out – think of a 5-10 year time lag from idea conception to final output.
