Premise Statement
The role of the National or Federal Government in economic and social issues would dominate the political discourse during the 20th and 21 Centuries. Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive agenda, Woodrow Wilson’s New Freedom and Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal led the US from a laissez faire role to an interventionist role for government.
Use your assigned readings and other credible sources to affirm or contradict one of the following comments as it relates to the Premise Statement above:
- Regulating monopolies, enactment of the Federal Reserve System (FED) in 1914 (to bring stability to the economy), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and government development of projects like the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in the absence of private development dramatically changed the mission of government from its traditional laissez faire role in economic matters. What is your position? Explain.
