1) DISCUSSION QUESTION
Hiring Decisions: Motivation vs. Ability (20 points)
Discuss whether ability or motivation is more important in selecting the right person for the right job. Explain your rationale
2) PEER REVIEW #2 (DAWN)
Hello Professors and Classmates,
In my opinion it is more important to select a motivated person over a person that has the ability. A person with motivation is will to learn the job and perform at higher standards because of the way they feel. The person that has the ability can have the persona of I know how to do this job so what is in it for me.
I speak from experience because I have more motivation than I have ability in my current position and the motivation keeps me learning new things and improving on a daily basis. So I feel that I am doing a better job than my neighbor who has the ability to do the job but does not provide very good customer service to our callers.
3) PEER REVIEW #3 (MYAH)
In an ideal situation, I would be able to find a motivated candidate that also has the right abilities for the job. If that is not possible, and I had two candidates, one highly motivated and one with abilities, but lacked motivation, I would always choose the highly motivated candidate. Highly motivated people are on a mission to always better themselves. They would be able to learn the skills and abilities needed to perform the job. A person with no motivation might or might not use their abilities to do the job. I came from a very small high school. My class graduated with 24 students. Quite often we were the underdog in sporting events. From an early age, I was taught the saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” I find this to be true in the workplace, as well. Motivation and work ethic are two very important qualities to look for in candidates.
