Our u06s3 reading assignment has us looking at two more process areas in the CMMI: Requirements Development (RD), and Technical Solution (TS). Recall that the CMMI doesn’t actually tell us how to engineer. Instead, it guides us toward recognizing an effective engineering process that is capable of successful outcomes at increasingly higher levels of maturity. Both RD and TS are defined at CMMI Level 3, the more mature level than we saw earlier with the Requirements Management (REQM) process areas at CMMI Level 2. This means that, presumably, you’d need to be compliance with the REQM process area before you could implement and become compliant in the RD and TS process areas. The process areas build on each other, and interact with each other as well.
Focusing on the specific goals articulated in the CMMI REQM, RD, and TS process areas: Reflect upon and discuss the similarities and differences between two perspectives: a) the systems engineering process as depicted in Figures 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4 in Chapter 2 of Blanchard & Fabrycky, and b) the actual engineering practices and techniques that we’ve been carrying out in this class. In terms of process capability, how close do we get to meeting the intent of our text material when compared to what we’ve actually been learning to do in our readings, discussions, and activities? How does the CMMI guide you to understanding the level of capability we are likely to have at the end of this class compared to everything we actually see in our readings (including text, SEBoK, and INCOSE Handbook)?
