The book is required because this paper is 100% based on it. The book is: AFTER DARK by HARUKI MURAKAMI
In a 3-page paper, explain what Murakami is obsessed with, and how he illustrates his obsession in the book. (How does he view the world? What kind of a world do these characters live in? What does Murakami think about modern life?) In other words, pick a central theme that he elaborates on, and then show a reader where, and how, he builds / constructs his theme. The main theme of the book is that everyone is connected to each other in a way ( but don’t use this theme because the professor asked us to fond different themes)
The paper should be addressed to a person who has already read the book, but who read it quickly, last night, and who didn’t understand what it’s REALLY about. They know what happens in the book but they don’t understand what it means / implies / illustrates / symbolizes / suggests. That’s your audience. You are thus a teacher in this paper, taking a slow reader by the hand and showing him what you know about the book, after looking at it closely and thinking a lot about it.
Your first paragraph should be your intro paragraph, where you lay it all out. You can even outline your paper in this part, if you want to. At the end of the paragraph you should explain what your interpretation of the book is, what you are going to be looking at in the paper. (If you include an outline, that part would come after the interpretation. So you’d say something like (for the thesis, or interpretation): Thus, in this book, Murakami is showing us how we long to connect with others but how we keep ourselves from connecting because we like simple lives, without complication, even more than we like being with other people. AND THEN you’d say something like: We can see this idea illustrated in the character of X, when he DOES THESE THINGS.)
After your intro paragraph, you need to prove your thesis with examples from the book. Each example should refer to the book but not summarize it too much. You bring it up in order to analyze it. This is when you really use those words—illustrates, implies, suggests, etc.
Stay simple and basic don’t use words that are too fancy and use small chunks of quotes in each paragraph and try to analyze each quote i also have some samples of a body paragraph that he wrote in class i can send them to you if it helps
