Assignment 1: Writing Workshop
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this week, you should be able to:
- Develop an argument based on a reading
- Justify the selection of an argument
- Draft original writing
- Report on writing feedback
- Thinking about academic work as a conversation, it can be easy to assume that an academic writer should not “take a side.” However, scholarly writing most commonly takes the form of an argument. This doesn’t mean that academic writing is aggressive or biased; it just means that scholars use the knowledge they have gathered to form and communicate an answer to a question. This week, you practice forming an argument in response to reading a provided research article. As you read, note where the authors seem to be making claims and where they support those claims with evidence. Think about what kinds of conversations you might have about those claims and evidence if you were to use them to prove a different point.
Writing is a process that involves continual drafting and revising. For this Assignment, you will get one-on-one feedback on your writing. Your Instructor will give advice on how to improve that particular piece of writing and, in the process, help you develop skills that can be applied to the rest of your writing.
