Begin your brainstorming for a solution by considering the fundamental principles and goals of your project — that is, thinking about, from an ethical standpoint, what exactly it is that you’re trying to achieve, and why you are motivated to do so.
Spend between ~500 words answering the following questions. This is a free write and should be guided by your own organic process of creating new ideas.
- WHAT type of speech should we attempt to more effectively restrict/limit? And/or what type of speech should we attempt to more effectively protect/tolerate?
- WHY should we attempt to more effectively restrict/limit this type of speech? And/or why should we attempt to more effectively protect/tolerate this type of speech?
- What are the costs/benefits of more restriction/limitation?
- What are the costs/benefits of more protection/tolerance?
For this first consideration of a solution, you can leave aside the question of the First amendment and the feasibility of any given solution. For now, the question should be philosophical and moral. What SHOULD our society look like?
