The year of 1848 Irish ships came to Boston, New York, Charleston Savannah and New Orleans carrying many Irish Catholics. The Irish men and women were happy to be free and finally be able to live in America. The men found work at railroads, building canals, fire fighters and police. They also did lumber jack cutting down trees for lumber mills. Women became maids, cooks, caretakers and factory workers. They were great workers, hard workers with great reputations. Churches were build and provided education, hospitals, social services and activities. By 1900 Catholicism was the largest branch Christianity in America. Irish discovered their voting rights, many became politicians and mayors in many cities. In 1949 Irish won independence in Southern Ireland, today the British Irish still rule northern Ireland. By 1960 America had their first Irish President, John F. Kennedy. The holiday St. Patrick Day was honored. Many great things happen that to this day we still honor and respect Irish Catholics in America.
