Joann Lola (1984) has talked about a willingness model of sex, which was focused on lesbians. In this model, sexual activity starts with a willingness to be sexual (not necessarily sexual desire). This willingness might lead to sexual desire, followed by emotional and physical excitement responses, and possibly orgasm. Orgasm is not prerequisite for sexual activity to occur. Lola’s model is more complex and circular, allowing for pleasure or shutdown at any point in the process of sexual response. Is this model an improvement compared to Kaplan or Masters and Johnson?
