I learned that the purpose of a piece of writing is to inform, persuade, or entertain the readers. I also learned that a writer’s tone reveals the attitude that he or she has toward a subject. One example the author used in the video was, “I hate this job. The customers are rude, the managers are idiots, and the food smells like dog chow.” The tone of this statement is bitter and angry. After this lesson I can definitely recognize the purpose and tone. When reading a passage I will ask myself, what is the reason the author is writing this passage and what kind of attitude do they have toward the subject

I learned in this lesson about purpose and tone. Tone reveals the attitude that the writer has toward a subject. Tone is expressed through words and details that the writer selects. Purpose is the author’s reason for writing. I learned that three common purposes are to inform, persuade and to entertain. Inform gives information about the subject, persuade convince the reader to agree with the author, entertain amuse and delight; to appeal the reader’s senses and imagination. Examples of the authors tone are, critical, sympathetic, worried, self-pity. I feel that I can recognize tone and purpose after reading this lesson. I understand how to look for key words to identify the author’s tone and purpose.
