The members of the United Nations are impressed by your presentation. The information you provided has led to productive debates. There are now questions about prioritizing the issues at hand. Some of the countries are challenging your recommendations and questioning your reasons for not including certain other issues they believe are priorities.
There are four remaining threats in the list of major global issues. Review the topics and reflect on two that you did not use in Assignment 3a. Defend your reasons for considering these topics to be less important than the issues you assessed in Assignment 3a.
Energy sources
Civil war
Globalization
Poor health of entire populations
Lack of educational opportunities
Cultural taboos
Inappropriate uses of technology
Climate change
- Choose two of these four threats and write one paragraph on each threat stating why each is less a priority to the health of the global environment than the four you assessed in Assignment 3a.
- Support your argument with at least three scholarly sources for each threat chosen (a total of at least 6 sources) that can be used to support your position that these two threats are less a priority than the four threats which you chose to assess in assignment 3a.
- Each counterargument should include:
- An opening statement describing the threat; Three (3) points that offer evidence which supports your position that these threats are less a priority than the four threats that you assessed in Assignment 3a.
- Please cite at least three scholarly sources in your argument.
- For a brief list of resources for this assignment, please see the end of the course guide.
The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
- Examine the factors that account for why the growth in the world’s population can negatively affect global society.

Energy Sources
Energy is one of the most essential part of our life in different forms like electricity.
Almost 78% of the world’s population have daily access to electricity (100People).
More than one million terajoules of energy is used everyday in the world.
It equals to the energy produced if 7.5 billion people of the world keep boiling 70 kettles of water an hour around the clock.
And 70% of the world’s energy comes from Fossil Fuels.
Energy is one of the essential part of our life where 78% of the population have daily access to electricity. The whole world’s population uses one million terajoules energy on daily basis. About 70% of this world’s energy is produced by using fossil fuels which is becoming the main source of air pollution. This air pollution has become a global issue and the world has already jumped in to fight this issue.
2
Energy Sources
Since 1850s, the world has consumed almost 135 billion tones of crude oil.
The rate of consumption is increasing rapidly.
About one fifth of the world’s energy sources have already shifted to renewable energy like solar or hydro.
The sector of renewable energy is expected to grow about 2.6% per year till 2040.
The rate of growth of renewable energy is needed to be increased otherwise the global issue of air pollution will keep rising.
The fossil fuels including crude oil was among the first energy resources of the world. The world started extracting crude oil in 1850s and since then, the world has extracted almost 135 million tones of crude oil. These billion tones of crude oil have been used as a fuel in cars and to run the energy production sectors. The world needs to shift to renewable energy in order to save the energy sector before running out of fossil fuels. About 1/5th of the energy resources have already been shifted to renewable energy and this sector is expected to grow at 2.6% per year till 2040. The rate is not enough and the world needs to put extra efforts to increase it.
3
Energy Sources
The main source of renewable energy has been the hydroelectric power.
The recent development in the solar technology have surged the amount of energy developed by sun.
The production of solar energy have increased by 50% since last 50 years.
By using new photovoltaic cells, the UK alone has added 12GW of solar energy in the electricity network since last 12 months (BBC).
The most used source of renewable energy was hydroelectric power. The recent development in the solar technology have shifted the trend of the world toward the energy by sun. The production of solar energy have increased by 50% since last 50 years which means that the world has been shifting towards renewable energy rapidly. For example, the UK produced 12GW of solar energy in last 12 months which is equivalent to the entire energy produced by coal powered station.
4
Energy Sources
The greatest benefit of renewable energy sources is the economic benefit.
The public health will improve by use of renewable energy sources.
The greenhouse gases emission will be reduced to a considerable level.
The dependence on fossil fuels will be reduced and the energy supply will be diversified.
The positive environmental impact will benefit the humanity in future.
The renewable energy have a number of advantages for the world. The first and important benefit is the economic benefit because renewable energy is much cheaper than the fossil fuel energy. It will reduce the greenhouse gases emission which in turn will improve the public health. The renewable energy will reduce the dependence of the world from fossil fuels. The reduced greenhouse gases emission will create a good impact on the environment which will be beneficial for the world in future.
5
Globalization
Globalization is the interconnectedness of the world.
It refers to the connection of different parts of the world for trade and other mutual relations.
The current era is the era of globalization.
Most of the world has been connected to each other through trade and other interests.
It makes the world a “global village” then why it is considered as a global issue?
Globalization has made the whole world a global village where each and every country is connected due to some mutual interests. Some countries have trade interests while others have political interests. The globalization seems to be a good thing for the world then why it is being considered as a global issue? The next slide will define it.
6
Globalization
The biggest issue with globalization is that the rich is becoming richer while the poor is becoming poorer.
The rich people get more chances to grow due to their global presence while the poor people are not getting that much chances.
The investors and managers are earning millions and billions while the workers are striving to earn their bread.
This is why globalization has become a global issue.
Globalization has opened doors for the investors while closed chances for the workers. The rich people are getting richer due to high exposure while poor are getting poorer day by day. The equal opportunity has been highly affected by globalization.
7
Globalization
Another big problem caused by globalization is that jobs are lost in the developed countries.
Jobs have been transferred to lower cost or developing countries.
Millions of jobs have been transferred to lower cost countries like China which has increased unemployment in developed countries.
The trade deficit of US have run up in past three decades
Globalization has caused loss of jobs in developed countries. The jobs from developed countries have been transferred to the developing countries where the labor costs are lower. The trade deficits have run up due to globalization which means that unemployment is definitely raised by it. The people from developed countries have to relocate to lower cost countries for jobs.
8
Globalization
Globalization has increased taxes in the world.
Free trade idea has been abandoned.
More than 161 countries have value added taxes on imports (Forbes).
Only some countries like the US have not implemented VAT.
This means that the actual purpose of globalization have been lost.
The definition of globalization is needed to be revised.
Globalization was introduced to increase free trade among the world but it seems like most of the world has forgot the definition of globalization. More than 161 countries have implemented value added taxes (VATs) which means that the trade barriers on imports and exports are still there. If the world wants globalization to work perfectly, it needs to redefine it otherwise it will continue to become a global issue.
9
Cultural Taboos
Cultural taboos are the part of our society.
It includes the activities which are forbidden or are thought scary.
It include actions which are allowed in one country while objectionable in other country or region.
For example, abortion is legal in some countries while illegal in many other countries.
Similarly some countries allow adultery while most of the remaining countries see it as objectionable.
Cultural taboos are part of our society. It includes different cultural beliefs which may be allowed in one region while objectionable in other regions. It includes the actions which are either scary or forbidden. Most of the cultural taboos fall in the category of religion. Most part of cultural taboos are dependent upon adultery.
10
Cultural Taboos
Cultural taboos vary with countries and regions.
For example, in African countries when talking to the tribal chief, the head should not above his.
Cambodians believe that the photo of 3 people should not be taken (UFIC).
Homosexuality is allowed in UK while strictly forbidden in Arab countries.
These cultural taboos may give rise to many global conflicts.
Cultural taboos vary with countries. The beliefs of one country may bi conflicted with other countries. For example, it is not allowed to have your head above the tribal chief when talking to him in African countries. Similarly Cambodians believe that the photo of 3 people should not be taken. Homosexuality is one of the most famous cultural taboo.
11
Cultural Taboos
Homosexuality is one of the most famous cultural taboos in the world.
Some of the countries believe that everyone is allow to choose whom they should love or live with.
While other nations believe that relationships with same sex causes many issues and problems.
This global conflict is causing many debates in the world.
Many believe that it causes diseases.
Homosexuality is one of the most discussed taboos in the world. People believe that everyone should be given the right to love whom he/she wants. The restrictions on homosexuality is due to the diseases which are related with it. These issues with homosexuality are causing many global issues and debates.
12
Cultural Taboos
The issue of cultural taboo is not severe as long they are not compared with the other ones.
For example, the Muslims believe in halal eating which means that Muslims are allowed only to eat foods that are allowed. The restricted foods like alcohol or bacon is not allowed.
It do not create any problem until a Muslim visits a non-Muslim country or a non-Muslim visits a Muslim country
The issue of cultural taboos are restricted to some regions or countries. They do not become a problem until provoked. For example, Muslims eat only halal food which is allowed in Islam. They are forbidden to ear bacon or alcohol. It doesn’t seem any problem for a Muslim until he visits a non-Muslim country.
13
Climate Change
Climate change is the variation in the climate of the world.
It is causing many issues in the world.
The world is getting warmer day by day.
Nine out of ten warmest years have been since 2000 (Global Dimension).
This means that climate change is disturbing the natural habitat of the earth.
This change is because of human behavior rather than natural process.
Climate change is the variation of climate in the world which is increasing the temperature of the world. It is causing many issues like global warming. The global warming has increased the world’s temperature which can be proved by the fact that ten out of nine warmest years in the history have occurred after 2000. The issue of climate change is caused by human behavior rather than natural process.
14
Climate Change
Climate change is mainly caused due to greenhouse gases.
Carbon dioxide and methane gases are released in the air which are depleting ozone layer.
The depletion of ozone later allows ultraviolet sun rays to enter to the earth.
These rays directly contribute in increase the temperature of the earth’s habitat.
The main cause of climate change of earth is the greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases include methane and carbon dioxide gas. These gases release into the air due to many human activities. These gases disturb the ozone layer which allows the ultraviolet gases to enter the earth. These ultraviolet rays increase the temperature of the world.
15
Climate Change
Most of the human activities produce carbon dioxide.
The carbon dioxide is at its highest level now in out atmosphere than it was in 650,000 (mfa).
The world has been striving to reduce the production of carbon dioxide.
For this purpose, the world has made carbon emission reduction plans.
Most of the large corporations are working to reduce their carbon footprint.
Carbon dioxide is one of the main causes of climate changes. It is at its highest level in this atmosphere than it was in previous 650,000 years. The world has realized the importance of reducing the carbon footprint of the world. For this purpose, the world has made carbon emission reduction plans.
16
Climate Change
The world has stepped in to reduce carbon emission.
The organizations like UN have been putting special efforts for this cause.
The world has been shifting from fossil fuel energy to renewable energy.
Solar and hydroelectric energy has been becoming new and advanced sources of energy.
If the world fails to reduce the climate change, the humanity will cease to exist.
The world has realized that carbon emission is very important to be reduced. Many organizations like UN have been spending billions of dollars to save the earth’s natural climate. The large corporations are shifting from fossil fuels to new renewable energy sources. This will help to save the climate for the sake of humanity.
